Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in New Zealand

New Zealand is deeply committed to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals designed to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice by 2030. The New Zealand government integrates these goals into national policies and collaborates across various sectors to promote sustainable development.

National Implementation and Monitoring

New Zealand has established a framework for implementing and monitoring the SDGs:

  • Ministry for the Environment: Coordinates national efforts to achieve the SDGs, ensuring alignment with domestic policies and international commitments.
  • Statistics New Zealand: Monitors and reports on SDG indicators, providing data to track progress and inform policy decisions.
  • Local Governments and Communities: Play a crucial role in implementing SDGs at the community level, tailoring actions to local needs and engaging with communities.

International Cooperation

New Zealand actively participates in international cooperation to promote sustainable development globally:

  • Development Partnerships: Collaborating with bilateral and multilateral partners, donor agencies, and international organizations to mobilize resources and support SDG implementation.
  • Pacific Regional Cooperation: Engaging in regional initiatives and partnerships to address shared challenges and promote sustainable development in the Pacific region.
UNDP

New Zealand Human Development Index (HDI) | Human Development Report

Thirty years ago, UNDP created a new way to conceive and measure progress. Instead of using growth in GDP as the sole measure of development, we ranked the world’s countries by their human development: by whether people in each country have the freedom and opportunity to live the lives they value.
