UN High-Level Panel on Women’s Economic Empowerment
The High-Level Panel on Women’s Economic Empowerment has been established to address the specific economic issues that affect women and to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its promise to leave no one behind.
Gender equality remains the greatest human rights challenge of our time. Economic empowerment is a uniquely potent way for women to achieve greater control over their own lives. Yet, too often, women are unpaid or underpaid and unable to be dynamic economic actors. Inclusive growth cannot occur without their full participation.
To lead a discussion on closing gaps for women’s economic empowerment and in line with his leadership on and long-standing commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, during his tenure as UN Secretary-General, established the High-Level Panel on Women’s Economic Empowerment. The panel brings together leaders from different constituencies – governments, civil society, business and international organizations. The initiative is supported by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (UN-Women) in collaboration with the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID).
