Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria

Nigeria is committed to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals designed to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice by 2030. The Nigerian government integrates these goals into national policies and collaborates across various sectors to promote sustainable development.

National Implementation and Monitoring:
Nigeria has established a framework for implementing and monitoring the SDGs:

  • The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs (OSSAP-SDGs): Coordinates national efforts to achieve the SDGs, aligning policies and programs with the SDG framework.
  • National Bureau of Statistics (NBS): Monitors and reports on SDG indicators, providing data to track progress and inform policy decisions.
  • State and Local Governments: Play a crucial role in implementing SDGs at sub-national levels, adapting strategies to local contexts and engaging with communities.

International Cooperation:
Nigeria actively participates in international cooperation to promote sustainable development globally:

  • Development Partnerships: Collaborating with bilateral and multilateral partners, donor agencies, and international organizations to mobilize resources and support SDG implementation.
  • South-South Cooperation: Sharing knowledge, expertise, and best practices with other developing countries to facilitate mutual learning and capacity building in sustainable development.
