Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Portugal

Portugal is actively committed to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global agenda comprising 17 goals aimed at addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges by 2030. The Portuguese government has integrated the SDGs into national policies and initiatives, collaborating with various stakeholders to promote sustainable development across the country.

National Implementation and Monitoring:
Portugal has established mechanisms to implement and monitor progress towards the SDGs:

  • National Commission for Sustainable Development: Coordinates national efforts to achieve the SDGs, involving government ministries, local authorities, and civil society organizations.
  • National Statistics Institute (INE): Monitors and reports on SDG indicators, providing data-driven insights to track progress and inform policy decisions.

International Cooperation:
Portugal actively participates in international cooperation to advance sustainable development globally:

  • Development Aid: Providing development assistance, technical expertise, and financial support to developing countries to achieve the SDGs.
  • European Union Collaboration: Engaging in EU-wide initiatives and partnerships to address transnational challenges and promote sustainable development within Europe and beyond.
