Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Pakistan
Pakistan is committed to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals designed to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice by 2030. The Pakistani government has integrated these goals into national policies and collaborates with various sectors to promote sustainable development.
National Implementation and Monitoring:
Pakistan has established a robust framework for implementing and monitoring the SDGs:
- The Planning Commission of Pakistan: Coordinates national efforts to achieve the SDGs, ensuring alignment with domestic and international sustainability policies.
- The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS): Monitors and reports on SDG indicators, providing data to track progress and inform policy decisions.
- Local Governments and Municipalities: Play a crucial role in implementing SDGs at the community level, tailoring actions to local needs and contexts.
International Cooperation:
Pakistan actively participates in international cooperation to promote sustainable development globally:
- Development Assistance: Providing financial and technical support to developing countries to help them achieve the SDGs.
- Bilateral and Multilateral Partnerships: Collaborating with international organizations and countries to advance the global SDG agenda.

Pakistan: Exploding population bomb
While in other underdeveloped countries, the population growth rate has slowed down significantly, it is a different story in Pakistan. The latest population census has shown that Pakistan has moved up the ladder becoming the fifth most populous nation only behind India, China, the United States and Indonesia. It is an alarming situation, especially considering the extent of poverty in the country.
With a staggering growth rate of 2.4 per cent per annum, the country’s population is around 208 million. That marks an increase of more than 57pc since the last population census in 1998, and is higher than what had been projected.
